“I would recommend the qualification to anyone who enjoys a challenge, and is mathematically minded.” Year 12 Pupil

Entry Requirements:

To study A level Further Mathematics you are expected to have obtained at least a B grade at GCSE higher tier.

What is Further Mathematics?

Further Mathematics is an AS or A level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A level Mathematics. Further Mathematics is taken alongside an AS or A level in Mathematics.

What will I learn whilst studying further Mathematics?

The course will be presented in an interesting and relevant fashion. The emphasis will be on clear thinking and probing questioning. The full use of the department’s resources will be at hand. Appropriate software will be used both on the department’s computer system and the interactive whiteboard. The aim here will be to use the software to increase understanding and conceptual awareness of the subject matter and hopefully to give you a glimpse of the subject’s considerable beauty.

Course Content:

AS Unit 1: Further Pure Mathematics A: (13% of qualification)

AS Unit 2: Further Statistics A (13% of qualification)

AS Unit 3: Further Mechanics A (13% of qualification)

Candidates must take Unit 4 and either Unit 5 or Unit 6.

A2 Unit 4: Further Pure Mathematics B (35% of qualification). This unit is compulsory.

A2 Unit 5: Further Statistics B (25% of qualification)

A2 Unit 6: Further Mechanics B (25% of qualification)

Learners will sit either Unit 5 or Unit 6. The paper will comprise a number of short and longer, both structured and unstructured questions, which may be set on any part of the subject content of the unit. A number of questions will assess learners’ understanding of more than one topic from the subject content.

Possible Careers:

If you are planning to take a degree such as Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc., or perhaps Mathematics itself, you will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, at least to AS level. AS Further Mathematics introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are vital in many STEM degrees.
