How do we challenge pupils in Bro Morgannwg?
- A Challenge Leader has been appointed to lead and monitor the provision.
- Collaboration with specialist agencies such as NACE.
- Collaboration with the Seren Academy at both county and national levels to provide additional opportunities for more able and talented Year 8-13 students.
- Continuous professional development opportunities for staff focused on pedagogy that enables teachers to ‘teach to the top’.
- Raising staff awareness of the need to identify more able and talented students and providing a curriculum that meets their needs.
- Establishing a register of more able and talented students and distributing it to staff.
- Where appropriate, some students study additional or advanced GCSE and A-level subjects earlier than their peers.
- Encouragement to complete university-level courses, such as Openlearn courses.
- Opportunities for more able and talented students to enrich their learning through various experiences offered by departments, such as research tasks, leadership experiences, cross-school collaboration and work experience.
- Encouraging students to take advantage of the school’s wide range of extracurricular experiences as well as local and national clubs, competitions, and residential courses.
- Motivational sessions and pastoral care from their personal tutor/ class teacher.
- Motivational sessions and pastoral care from the Challenge Leader for secondary students identified as exceptional in at least three subjects.
- Creating an Individual Learning Plan for exceptional secondary students.
- Assessment, progress tracking, and identifying underachievement in line with the school’s assessment policy.
- Awarding pupils through Classcharts (Secondary), House points (Primary) assemblies, the press, and annual award ceremonies to celebrate achievements etc.
- In March 2016, the school received a second NACE Challenge Award Accreditation, recognising our excellent provision for more able and talented students.
How can parents support their child?
- Set aside time each day to discuss things with your child.
- Help your child with self-organisation and time management by making effective use of their diary.
- Encourage your child to try new activities by joining the numerous extracurricular activities offered by the school.
- Enrich your child’s experiences by encouraging visits to places like art galleries, museums, and sports centres.
- Stimulate interest by encouraging your child to use resources at home, such as the internet, books, maps, and watching educational programs or films.
- Give your child opportunities to meet other children who share the same interests, e.g., by joining local clubs and societies.
- Encourage your child, if the opportunity arises, to attend workshops, masterclasses, and university lectures.
- Encourage your child to take advantage of opportunities that arise on Teams.
- For Years 10-13, encourage your child to take advantage of opportunities provided by the Seren Space.
