KS4 (Year 10-11) Art and Design
General Aims
The GCSE Art and Design course will cover a wide range of skills and experiences that will enable pupils to develop original ideas through to finished products, following an organised methodology and approach. The course will develop the individual’s judgement and ability.
Within the course, pupils will be encouraged to incorporate studies of work by other Artists, Craft workers and Designers.
There will be an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills within the following fields –
• Drawing and Painting
• Printmaking
• 3D Design
• Critical & Contextual Studies
The GCSE Art and Design will consist of two parts:
• Assessment 1: Candidate Portfolio (60%)
• Assessment 2: Externally Set Task (40%)
The portfolio unit will be internally set by the department and developed from personal starting points. The portfolio will motivate the personal interest of each pupil and at the same time appropriately relate to worthwhile educational experiences.
The course is designed to encompass four principal areas. These areas are incorporated into the four assessment objective headings:
• Contextual understanding
• Creative making
• Reflective recording
• Personal presentation
The Question Paper is called the Controlled Assignment and represents the externally set element of the course, and is characterised by visual and written triggers.
Summary of Assessment
Unit 1 (Candidate Portfolio) (60%) |
Internally set and developed from personal and/or given starting points. Selected and presented by the candidate from work undertaken within the course. Requires evidence of how the candidate has met each of the assessment objectives. |
Unit 2 (Externally set task or starting point) (40%) |
Requires a sustained period of focused study of no longer than 10 hours Presented to the candidate no earlier than the start of January in the year of the examination. Requires evidence of how the candidate has met each of the assessment objectives |
KS4 (Year 10-11) Textiles
General Aims
The GCSE Art and Design – Textile Design course will cover a wide range of skills and experiences that will enable pupils to develop original ideas through to finished products, following an organised methodology and approach. The course will develop the individual’s judgement and ability.
Within the course, pupils will be encouraged to incorporate studies of work by other Artists, Craft workers and Designers.
There will be an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills within the following fields –

• Printmaking
• Techniques such as ‘batik’
• Sewing
• Critical & Contextual Studies
The GCSE Art and Design Textile Design course will consist of TWO parts:
• Assessment 1: Candidate Portfolio (60%)
• Assessment 2: Externally Set Task (40%)

KS5 (Year 12-13)
Entry Requirements:
You should attain a B grade, or higher, while studying GCSE Art and Design. Pupils attaining a C grade will be considered if they have the required skills to complete the course successfully. Special consideration will be given to pupils who have not studied GCSE Art and Design.
What is Art and Design?
The Art and Design course has been designed in order to allow pupils to gain an extensive and flexible learning experience. The specification builds upon the breadth a depth of pupil creativity and gives the opportunity to work as an individual across the study areas (fine, art, textiles, graphic communication, 3D design and photography). There is a written element to the work and pupils will be expected to explain and evaluate their work in an intellectual manner.
What will I learn whilst studying Art and Design?
• a broad curriculum involving awareness, interest and creative making
• opportunities for bold initiatives in personal development a stimulating mix of highly motivated experimentation, application and discovery
• opportunities to learn through a variety of interpretative and expressive skill
Course content:
Unit 1 – Personal Creative Enquiry (Year 12)
Extended personal research project/portfolio with outcome/s based upon themes, and subject material, which is personal and meaningful to the learner. A combination of critical, practical and theoretical work is essential.
Unit 2 – Personal Investigation (to include two parts) (Year 13)
Critical research portfolio/project, practical and theoretical, with outcome/s based upon themes, and subject material, which is personal and meaningful to the learner. Extended written element, which can include images and texts, that must pertain in an obvious manner to the practical work.
Unit 3 – Externally set task (Year 13)
Preparation period, and then this work is used in order to verify ideas in a sustained and detailed piece of work (15 hours under supervised conditions).
Possible careers:
An excellent preparation for life including work, further and higher education. Interior design, architecture, theatre design, photography, animation, fine art, jewellery design, costume design, graphic design, product design, illustration, website and app design.
