The music department reinforces and upholds the musical traditions of Wales through developing an array of musical activities including, singing groups and various choirs. The choirs compete annually in the Eisteddfod and participate in esteemed performances throughout the year. Composition, performance, developing an understanding of the history and musical theory behind the terminology is the aim. Through all of these activities within the classroom and beyond we ensure that we promote the school community and showcase the school’s talent through all of Wales.

Aims
The course provides an opportunity for pupils to develop their musical interests and talents, through performing, appraising and composing music.
Course Details
The 4 main areas of study listed below and will provide stimulus for composing, performing and appraising over the two-year course (see Unit 3):
Unit 1: Performing: Examination: 35% of the qualification
Do you play an instrument? Do you enjoy singing? Have you ever wanted to be in a band, singing group or orchestra? You will have an opportunity to develop your performing skills both as a soloist and as a member of a band or group during the two year course. A minimum of two pieces, one of which must be an ensemble performance. The other piece(s) may be either solo and/or ensemble. One of the pieces performed must link to an area of study of the learner’s choice
Unit 2: Composing: Course Work: 35% of the qualification
You will need to present Two compositions, one of which must be in response to a brief set by WJEC. Learners will choose one brief from a choice of four, each one linked to a different area of study. The second composition is a free composition for which learners set their own brief.
Unit 3: Appraising: Listening Examination:1hour; 30% of the qualification You will listen to and discuss a variety of musical styles, taken from the 4 areas of study – from Baroque music to Rock and Pop. Eight questions in total, two on each of the four areas of study listed below:

You’re expected to gain a high grade at GCSE in addition to being of grade 5 standard or above on an instrument or voice.
What is Music and what will I learn whilst studying?
This specification provides learners with the opportunity to study music in an integrated way where the skills of performing, composing and appraising reinforce knowledge and understanding of musical elements, contexts and language.
The specification also allows learners to specialise in either performing or composing for an additional 8% of the qualification by providing two options for both Units 4 and 5 at A2. Studying music at this level will ensure an ability to combine various academic, creative and practical skills whilst developing the self-discipline to regularly rehearse an instrument or voice in order to perform confidently: very important skills for any challenging career.
Course Content:
Learners will develop information and an understanding of music through four areas of study
• The Western Classical Tradition - Religious Choral Music 1730-1800 with Mozart Requiem. A2 delves further into the Requiem through Verdi and the Romantic era.
• Musical Theatre – studying 4 composers – Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Michel Schonberg and Andrew Lloyd Webber. For A2 studies turn to American Musical Theatre with Sondheim and Schwarz.
• Twentieth and Twenty First Century music – Impressionism, Debussy and Ravel.
Possible Careers:
Essential for pursuing a music degree at university or to follow a performance course at a conservatoire, first steps to becoming a music teacher, tv and film work, enriching composition skills to name but a few.
