“I think that the choice of Product Design will be a wise one for my future. The course promotes creativity and developing areas of interest. I chose Product Design in order to experiment with different methods of working. There is an interesting blend of theory, computer design, problem solving and practical work. As well as this we’ve had the opportunity to visit industry to see modern manufacturing methods.”

KS4 (Year 10-11)
Aims
Design and Technology offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for you to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products. Through studying Design and Technology, you will be prepared to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world.
You will learn how to work with a wide variety of materials in order to design and make practical products that arise from the needs of real life design situations.
The course is an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for you to play a part in shaping the future as a designer or engineer. Do you enjoy:

• designing from an initial idea to a final completed solution?
• designing with CAD/CAM programmes – ‘Adobe Illustrator’, ‘Google Sketch Up’ and ‘2D Design’?
• working with design equipment, hand tools and computer controlled machinery?
If so, then Design and Technology is the course for you!
Course details
The specification enables you to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.
In year 10 you will undertake a series of short projects and focused tasks in order to increase your experience and understanding of the main subject areas, namely:
• designing and making 3 dimensional and graphical products
• working with a variety of materials such as plastics, metals and wood
• Computer aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture.
You will design and make your own products as well as using Integrated Computer Technology (ICT) and CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacture) which is essential in this field in order to model ideas and manufacture quality products. You will become adept at using a variety of software including ‘Adobe Illustrator’, ‘Google Sketch Up’ and ‘2D Design’.
The focus of year 11 will be the Design and make task; to design and make a working product and a supporting design portfolio. Suitable areas for project development could include graphics, jewellery, furniture design, educational games and devices to aid the disabled or storage.
Assessment
The assessment is comprised of 2 units:
Unit 1: Design and Technology in the 21st Century which is a 2 hour written examination and is 50% of the qualification.
It is a mix of short answer and extended questions assessing knowledge and understanding of product design
Unit 2: An extended Design and make task for which you are allowed approximately 35 hours to complete. It is also 50% of the qualification.
KS5 (Year 12-13)
Entry Requirements:
Pupils who choose Design and Technology should be imaginative, resourceful, show initiative and a willingness to work independently. In most cases you will have already gained a grade B or higher in GCSE Design and Technology (Graphic Products or Resistant Materials). Pupils who have not followed these subject at GCSE (but have gained at least 5 GCSEs at grade B or above including Mathematics and Science) will be considered for suitability on an individual basis.
What is Product Design?
This course offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for pupils to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests or future careers.
What will I learn whilst studying Product Design?
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It encourages learners to use creativity and imagination when applying design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real world problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, aspirations and values.
Course Content:
The examination includes a mix of structured and extended writing questions assessing learners’ knowledge and understanding of:
• technical principles
• designing and making principles along with their ability to:
• analyse and evaluate design decisions and wider issues in design and technology.
Core technical principles – Manufacturing, Innovation, Fitness for purpose, Digital design and digital manufacture. Safe working practices. In-depth technical principles of product design – the characteristics and working properties of materials, surface finish, smart and modern materials, production processes.
Core design and making principles – design theory, key historic design movements. Social, ethical and moral considerations in product design. Analysis and evaluation. Specialist tools, processes and equipment.
A design and make task, based on a brief developed by the candidate, assessing the candidate’s ability to:
• identify, investigate and outline design possibilities
•design and make prototypes
• analyse and evaluate design decisions and wider issues in design and technology.

It is intended to be of interest to those of you who aim to follow a higher education course or career in Design and Technology or an associated area such as Product Design, Graphic Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Interior Design or Architecture.
